Detailed description
Pyrantel Pamoate Tablets
For Pet Use
[Main Ingredient] Pyrantel Pamoate
[Description] Light yellow tablets.
[Pharmacological Action] Pyrantel is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic against nematodes. Its mechanism of action is to act as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent on susceptible parasites, causing paralysis. It has nicotinic properties similar to acetylcholine and also inhibits cholinesterase. It demonstrates 95% efficacy against common canine hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense), and roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina). It is also effective against feline hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme) and roundworms (Toxocara cati). It is highly effective against Strongylus vulgaris and Probstmayria vivipara, but has poor or variable activity against Strongylus edentatus and small strongyles.
After oral administration in dogs and cats, pyrantel is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaches high concentrations in the intestinal lumen, and can reach the distal large intestine to exert its anthelmintic activity. Absorbed drug is rapidly metabolized in the liver, with the majority excreted as metabolites in urine, while the remainder and unabsorbed drug are excreted in feces.
[Drug Interactions] (1) Due to similar mechanisms of action (toxicity), concomitant use of pyrantel with morantel or levamisole may increase toxicity.
(2) Concurrent use with organophosphates or diethylcarbamazine may enhance adverse reactions.
(3) It has antagonistic effects with piperazine and should not be used simultaneously.
